Bumiller to write Condi Bio

According to Editor And Publisher, Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller will be taking a year off to write a bio of Condi Rice.

This is interesting for a couple of reasons:

1) Bumiller's reporting has occasionally been cited by bloggers for passing on Republican memes. Is the fact that Condi wants Bumiller to write her bio indicate she believes she'd get more than a fair shake?

2) Is the timing of this effort intended to coincide with a potential bid by Rice for higher office?

I've been very skeptical in the past that she'd actually run, but this news certainly gives me pause.

Occasionally?!

Bumiller is in the Top Ten list of lefty blogger hate-figure journos with Adam Nagourney, amongst others - once-hissed harpies Jodi Wilgoren and Nedra Pickler seem to have dropped out. Steno Sue Schmidt still pops up from time to time...

Bumiller is just following orders with her soft-focus, supposedly humanizing vignettes in her White House sketches. Or Bill Keller would have cut her column.

Just like the NYT suits would have approved her Condi gig.

Of a piece with the Judith Miller/Chalabi arrangement: to stay on the inside, you have to pay a price. The Times has no problem with that.

On 08 - Candidate Condi is from some right-wing West Wing-type fantasy based in a parallel universe. (Probably involving an assassination season-ending cliffhanger.)

I've no idea what Swift-Boat susceptibilities she has; but I can neither see her getting to the convention, getting through the convention, nor getting elected in the general, polls or no polls.

The unappealing puss, the dark shade, the lack of the Y chromosome: I'm sure America wants to elect someone Prez who isn't a white male, but not make quite such a leap doing so.

Something in an Elizabeth Vargas would kill two birds...
